Wood Fired & Gas Rayburn Cookers 345W, 355SFW, Supreme & Solid Fuel Nouvelle TURNING ON/OFF

TURNING YOUR RAYBURN ON

Ensure that the water system is filled before firing the Rayburn

Warning. Always check that the flue and chimney is clean and not blocked, before lighting a solid fuel appliance.

1. Make sure you have the correct fuel available.

2. Open the ash-pit and fire doors, they are interlocked, requiring the firedoor to be opened first.

3. If necessary empty the grate and ash-pan of any ash or clinker by using the Riddling lever. Clinker can be removed from the grate by removing the clinker door, as shown in the drawings below.

4. Open the Chimney Damper fully and set the Priority/damper Lever to the cooking position

Later models may have the chimney damper at the front of the flue chamber.
5. Set the Secondary air-slide position to suit the fuel to be burned. This is accessed just inside the firebox door. With Coke or Sunbrite, the air slide should be closed with the lever pin to the left hand side; to the right for all other fuels.

6. If using wood only as a fuel, place the grate baffle(s) at the rear of the grate as shown.

7. Decide on the correct positions for the loose firebricks as shown. i.e. summer or winter conditions.

8. Lay a liberal supply of paper, covered by dry wood sticks and a small amount of the appropriate fuel. Alternatively fire lighters may be used.

9. Light the paper or firelighters and close both doors tightly.

10. When the fire is well established and alight, more fuel may be added up to the maximum level below the firebox door opening..

11. Chimney damper may gradually be closed to retain heat.

12 If cooking is to be carried out, close the spin-wheel to give the correct burning rate and hence the desired cooking temperature. After cooking, close the spin-wheel to allow fire to idle.

13. If heating is required, close spin-wheel and change the priority damper to the Heating position.

14. Use the boiler thermostat to automatically produce the correct water temperature.

15. When burning wood, it may be necessary to open the flue chamber door slightly, to reduce the flue draught and ensure slumbering rate. The higher the flue draught, the more the door will need to be open. Use the Flue Dilution lever for this as shown below.

WARNING. If the fire does not burn properly; or if there is a persistent smell of fumes; or you are unsure if the cooker has been serviced recently, --- DO NOT USE --- Have the appliance checked by a qualified engineer.

TURNING YOUR RAYBURN OFF

Warning for cookers containing boilers. During prolonged, very cold weather, in an otherwise unheated house, consideration should be given to draining the water system, to prevent freezing.

If the cooker is to remain unlit for a longer period, then the grate, ash-pan and fire-box should be cleaned of ash and clinker, including flue-ways.

The ash-pit, fire-box and oven doors should be left ajar and the chimney damper open, to prevent harmful condensation.

It is a good idea to have the chimney and flue-ways swept at this time and always before relighting a solid fuel appliance after a long period of non-use.
